Foundation: Fellowships

Since 1996, the AWSF/Ethicon Endo-Surgery, Inc. Fellowship has supported a number of women surgeons by funding original research in topics of flexible GI endoscopy, laparoscopy, minimal access techniques or related emerging technology.

A $25,000 Fellowship grant from Genomic Health was established in 2007. The fellowship is awarded for topics in the area of cancer-related research.

I received a grant that allowed me to organize and carry out a natural orifice surgical protocol for gastric restriction in swine. This was my first foray into this field and it introduced me to new procedures and new people involved in this area of research. One particular benefit is that our group plans to publish our results in a peer-reviewed journal. In addition, this collaboration has led to new ideas and further competitive grant funding on a non-bariatric foregut project. This AWS grant was much appreciated and very beneficial to my career. Most of all, I have enjoyed my interactions with the members of this association.

My application for the AWSF Ethicon Endo-Surgery grant was a natural outgrowth of my participation in AWS to connect professionally and personally with so many women surgical leaders and also as a career-enhancing strategy.

I am immensely grateful to AWS for this grant which allowed me to transition from basic bench-side investigation of liver pathology in mice into a translational program for human obesity-related liver disease. This bridge funding not only provides me with a mid career research development opportunity at a time of stringent NIH resources, but also opens up new directions for further my professional growth. I am especially grateful that this grant gave me the means to expose two women medical students fresh to the world of surgery to surgical research and thereby offer them opportunities for future professional advancement through participation in AWS. This grant is a gift which will keep on giving.
