AWS Virginia Chapter

Virginia was the first state to organize and incorporate a state chapter of AWS (2003), with the goal of developing relationships among women surgeons on the local level and providing residents and students with role models and career development opportunities.

Hilary Sanfey, MD, a transplant surgeon at the University of Virginia, served as the state chapter’s first president, and is the Immediate Past President/ACS Governor for the national organization, which has over 1700 members. Jeannie Savas, MD, a general surgeon at Virginia Commonwealth University, was the second Chapter President, Nancy Harthun, MD, a vascular surgeon at the University of Virginia, served after her.  Therese M. Duane, MD, FACS, followed Nancy Harthun, MD, Ana Schroen, MD, is the Immediate Past President, and Rebecca Britt, MD, serves as the Chapter's current President.

The Virginia Chapter of AWS hosts a Fall Meeting & Dinner each year as well as a Career Development Symposium each spring in conjunction with the meetings of the American College of Surgeons/Virginia Chapter & Virginia Surgical Society. In the past  few years since its inception, membership has grown to over 80 surgeons and future surgeons from Virginia and neighboring states.

Spring 2007 - The Virginia Chapter enjoyed a Spring meeting of the ACS/VSS that was a resounding success. The focus was on maintaining the triple threat and included talks from Dr. Rebecca Britt from EVMS elaborating on clinical research, Dr. Amy Grover from VCU educating us on how to start a lab and Dr. Marybeth Hughes from NCI on how to build a CV. The program culminated in our keynote address by Dr. Lena Napolitano from the University of Michigan speaking to us on the changes in acute care surgery.
