Tieraona LowDog, MD - Evidence-Based Approach to Botanicals
Topics covered included quality control, such as the regulatory status of dietary supplements and problems with contamination, adulteration and substitution; types of preparations, including description of infusion, decoctions, tinctures, standardized extracts and USP and NSF initiatives to help consumers identify quality products; and, the most popular botanicals/dietary supplements. This included safety, toxicity and dosage information for Echinacea, Black Cohosh, Glucosamine, Cranberry, Ephedra/Guarana and Ginseng.
Lucinda Ann Romero, MD - Medical Acupuncture
This presentation gave participants a brief history of acupuncture, particularly in the United States and explained how it works. Studies were reviewed that demonstrated the existence of acupuncture points and channels and discussed the physiologic changes that we know occur in acupuncture. Discussion also included how acupuncture can help surgical patients.
Yona Nelson-Schulman, PhD - Stress and Success
This two-hour seminar focused on the 'Stress Hardy' personality and what successful people do to stay healthy and motivated while under pressure. Some areas covered included the relationship between stress and performance, differentiating between 'good' and 'bad' stress, and simple techniques for coping with undesirable stress. Effective cognitive and behavioral approaches to stress management were reviewed, and participants had the chance to practice relaxation exercises.
