AWS hopes to bring down barriers that remain for women in surgery

The Association of Women Surgeons is committed to supporting the professional and personal needs of female surgeons at various stages in their careers - from residency through retirement. Since our founding in 1981, AWS has set up many programs with the specific objective of promoting the professional growth and advancement of our members. Truly an international organization, AWS has members in 15 countries, including: Australia, Beirut, Canada, the Commonwealth of Dominica, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Ireland, Israel, Japan, Latvia, Malaysia, South Africa, Switzerland, and the Unites States of America.

We congratulate Mary Klingensmith, who is one of the 2012 Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Parker J. Palmer Courage to Teach Award recipients.

Congratulations to all the women surgeons with new American College of Surgeons leadership roles and awards.

The American Surgical Association was founded in 1880 and is the nation's oldest and most prestigious surgical organization. The 2013 ASA Proposal for Membership is now open and must be initiated online by an ASA member. The deadline for submission is March 1, 2012. Click here for more information.

Erin W. Gilbert, MD, a Surgery Fellow at Oregon Health and Science University has been awarded the 2012 AWSF/Ethicon Endo-Surgery, Inc. $25,000 Grant for her project entitled "Optical Fiber Spectroscopy (OFS) and its Applications in Minimally Invasive Esophagectomy."

Emory University in Atlanta has been selected to host Mary Hooks, MD, MBA, FACS, of ETSU College of Medicine, as a Visiting Professor for a two-day visit prior to July 31, 2012.

New research is available entitled Women in Surgery Residency Programs: Evolving Trends from a National Perspective.

TTS Women in Transplantation has launched the TTS Women in Transplantation International Mentoring Scheme. The aim of this unique programme is to provide one to one mentoring by women professionals working in the field of transplantation to members of the TTS WIT initiative. The programme provides mentees with both a national and international mentor -- to enable mentees to discuss issues and receive support and guidance on both a local and international level that is independent from their place of work.
