2017 AWS STARR Poster Contest
Deadline for submissions: July 15, 2017
The Association of Women Surgeons is proud to present the 11th Annual Starr Poster Contest for Medical Students, Residents, and Fellows. The Starr Poster Contest, named for Dr. Nina Starr Braunwald, is designed to facilitate interaction and exchange of ideas between medical students interested in surgery, surgical residents/fellows, and faculty members of various institutions. We invite medical students, residents, and fellows to select their best work for presentation at the 2017 AWS Conference on Saturday, October 21, 2017.
Eligibility: The contest is open to medical students, residents, and fellows who are members of the Association of Women Surgeons. (You may apply to become a member during the submission period, but your application must be complete with dues paid prior to the submission deadline to be eligible.) You can send abstracts that were presented at other conferences except if you’re already presenting the same abstract at the ACS conference. You cannot send an abstract on a project that is published before the conference. If your abstract is accepted, you must register for the 2017 AWS Conference and present your work in person during the Scientific Session at the conference. (Please note that this session does not conflict with the medical student or resident activities at the ACS Clinical Congress.)
Prizes: Recognition and a monetary prize will be awarded for the top 3 medical student presentations and top 3 resident/fellow presentations. The top student and resident/fellow presentation winners will also receive a complimentary ticket to the AWS Foundation Awards Dinner on Monday, October 23, 2017.
Submission Process: Written abstracts will be used to select the presentations at the meeting. Please limit the abstract submission to 300 words or less (excluding the title and authors) and format your abstract submission as a Word document labeled “Last name AWS (resident, fellow, or medical student) Abstract”. Abstract topics eligible for submission are suggested to be surgical in nature, and can include Basic Science, Clinical Outcomes, Epidemiology, Health Policy, and Global Health. Case reports will NOT be accepted for this competition.
Include the following sections in your abstract:
- Author(s), to include degree and affiliation (please make sure the medical student/resident/fellow is first author)
- Please specify if the abstract is free of copyright restrictions and can be posted on the AWS
- Figures will not be accepted for the abstract, but are welcome in the oral/poster
Deadlines: Abstracts must be submitted no later than 11:59 PM EST Friday, July 15th, 2017 by email to firstname.lastname@example.org. Receipt of your abstract will be confirmed. Selected participants will be announced by Monday, August 15, 2017. If selected, you will be required to present your poster as a 2-minute podium presentation. Please also prepare an electronic poster and do not plan to bring a physical poster. We are changing the format this year and selected poster presenters will receive more details with their acceptance correspondence.
Please contact us at email@example.com with any questions or concerns. Thank you and we look forward to reading your submission!
