Welcome residents and fellows!

Women Surgeons ResidentStart your career right. Join your colleagues around the world and take advantage of the many resources and tools AWS has to offer.

AWS provides residents, interns and fellows with access to their peers and potential mentors who can guide them through the personal and professional transitions of their careers. Topics addressed through AWS by both residents and practicing surgeons include wellness during residency and pregnancy, targeting and tracking professional goals and career advancement.

Resident membership is $50/year and open to surgical interns, residents or fellows in training. Resident members may vote and hold office.

Women Surgeons Facebook ResidentThe group is used to plan dinners & informal meet-ups during national conferences, assist with residency interviewing accommodations, and allowing for greater communication between members. Participation in this group is limited to members of AWS only. Requests to join will be reviewed by the Administrator.


Current Projects

The Resident and Fellow Committee’s aim is to develop resources to support and promote women in surgical residency programs, connect women surgery residents to potential mentors, and to serve as mentors/advisors to medical students. It is an amazing networking experience and a great way to meet women surgeons all over the country. Some of the projects the committee is working on include:

  • Resident-focused Tweetchats.The Resident and Fellow committee held a Tweetchat that was co-sponsored by the ACS-RAS in January 2018, with plans to hold more resident-focused discussions in the future. You can follow all AWS Tweetchats using the hashtag #AWSChat.
  • The "Dear Pat" blog post series. Modeled after the "Dear Abby" column, "Pat" represents AWS founder Pat Neumann, who provides answers to questions from anonymous residents and fellows seeking advice on common issues facing surgical trainees in a series of blog posts.
  • AWS Coaching Program. In 2018, the committee is launching a Coaching Program that matches faculty with residents to address issues that contribute to burnout in women surgery residents.
  • STARR poster contest. The Resident and Fellow Committee takes an active role in selecting and reviewing abstracts for the yearly poster contest.
  • AWS Ambassador Program. Open to resident and fellows entering their first year of clinical practice, this program connects you with an ambassador from AWS who will share knowledge and advice as you navigate the world outside of medical school and residency. Applications are due May 15.
