Dr. Kristen Carter Wins 2019 AAST/AWS Scholarship

For the fifth year, The American Association for the Surgery of Trauma (AAST) and AWS have partnered to award a scholarship to one of the association's members. The recipient of the 2019 joint sponsored scholarship is Dr. Kristen Carter, a resident at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. The AAST/AWS Scholarship recipient receives attendance to the 78th Annual Meeting of AAST and Clinical Congress of Acute Care Surgery, September 18-21 in Dallas, Texas and will be recognized during the meeting.

"I have been a member of the national chapter of AWS since my intern year and have been involved as a resident adviser with our local AWS chapter, which has been active with Stop the Bleed training in our community. This scholarship will allow me meet like-minded individuals involved in trauma surgery research, helping to advance my future career as a surgeon-scientist and allow me to bring new ideas and techniques back to the people in Mississippi," Dr. Carter said.

Dr. Carter, a Texas native, completed her undergraduate studies at Texas A&M University, graduating magna cum laude in 2011 with a B.S in biochemistry and genetics and minors in chemistry and music. She received her M.D. from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in 2015 before moving to Mississippi to begin her General Surgery Residency at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. She is currently a Trauma Research Fellow in Dr. Matthew Kutcher's trauma research lab, focusing on coagulation abnormalities in trauma. She plans to pursue a career in Trauma and Acute Care Surgery/Surgical Critical Care.
