AWS Statement on COVID-19
Monday, March 16, 2020
The current situation with COVID-19 has put a huge strain on the AWS community and the healthcare system as a whole. Our thoughts go out to our members, their personal and professional families, and patients as we confront this pandemic. Directives and priorities are changing on a daily basis and AWS defers to the local, regional and national recommendations as to the management of COVID-19 and prioritization of surgery.
AWS recognizes that this is a tumultuous time for our members. Our surgeons and residents may be asked to do tasks that are out of their normal scope of practice. We recognize that many normal rites of passage and important opportunities will be changing or cancelled, like conferences, presentations, interviews for fellowship, away rotations and match day ceremonies.
We urge our members and the surgical community to recognize the strain that will occur with these changes and to continue to support our healthcare community in an inclusive manner. We know the power of our community, the strength of our surgeons, and our ability to be resilient in the face of this adversity.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. Please feel free to reach out to us with any ideas that you may have to support our community during this time.
