Senior Member, Department of Women’s Oncology
Moffitt Cancer Center

Professor of Surgery
University of South Florida

Dr. Laronga is board-certified in general surgery. Her clinical and research interests are diseases of the breast from bench to bedside (genomics/proteomics, nipple sparing mastectomy, quality of life, and quality indicators). She recently served as treasurer of the Association of Women Surgeons 2012-2014, and serves on national committees. Currently she is the Florida representative (Board of Governors) for the American College of Surgeons, The Florida State Chair for the Commission on Cancer, and on the Florida Division Board of the American Cancer Society. She serves on several national societal committees, such as the Society of Surgical Oncology and the Society of University Surgeons. She is also the single mother of two children.

Dr. Laronga earned her medical degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) in Newark. She completed an internship and general surgery residency at UMDNJ (now Rutgers) in New Brunswick. She also completed a 3 year fellowship in surgical oncology and research at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas.

She chose to become a member in the Association of Women Surgeons as a resident under the mentorship of Irene Wapnir MD. However, it wasn’t until meeting with Betsy Newhall Tuttle and Hilary Sanfey, that her passion for AWS was ignited. Through more than 10 years of involvement in the AWS, she has appreciated the opportunity work with exemplary women role models, to be mentored, to network, to surround herself with a community family, and now learn leadership and mentorship to enhance the lives of women surgeons just like her.

The growth of the AWS through enthusiastic and energetic women committed to making the profession better for others is a tremendous source of joy. Eva Singletary, one of my mentors, said, “the greatest sign of my success, is that those I mentor/ train will exceed my own accomplishments”. That philosophy burns inside me and is at the core of AWS. That is my charge.
