Dr. Marx is board-certified in general surgery and an American Board of Quality Assurance and Utilization Review Physicians (ABQAURP) fellow, with a sub-specialty in Risk Management. Dr. Marx has practiced in Galveston County for over 25 years in both private and academic practice settings. She has extensive experience in all aspects of general surgery with a special interest in laparoscopic surgery, diseases of the breast and endoscopy. She served as President of the Association of Women Surgeons 2010-2011, and serves on national committees for the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Marx is Professor of Surgery at UTMB and has previously served in several senior administrative appointments within the School of Medicine. She is also the mother of two children.

Dr. Marx received her medical degree from Rush Medical College in Chicago. She completed her general surgery residency at The University of Texas Medical Branch, furthering her education during her residency by receiving a Master of Medical Science Degree. In 2000, she completed her Master of Business Administration from the University of Houston – Clear Lake.

Dr. Marx became a member of the Association of Women Surgeons just several years after its inception. She was at the American College of Surgeons national meeting and saw a flier for an AWS meeting and has been enthralled with the organization ever since. Immediately Dr. Marx found a group of inspiring women with whom to share her professional journey. She joined the AWS Academic Practice Committee and became Chair of the Committee in 2005. Dr. Marx then moved to the Executive Council serving as Secretary, Vice-President, President-Elect and President in 2010. She had the wonderful privilege of serving as AWS President at the organization’s 30th Anniversary. Dr. Marx has always felt that the AWS is an amazing organization and its future is very bright. She has found the AWS responsive and relevant to our times, working to impact all surgeons in a positive way. Dr. Marx now serves as the first AWS Liaison to the American College of Surgeons Advisory Council on General Surgery.
