Kandace P. McGuire, MD, FACS, is a breast surgical oncologist and Associate Professor of Surgery at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA. She also serves as the Director of Breast Surgery at VCU as well as the Surgical Leader of the Comprehensive Breast Cancer Clinic at the Massey Cancer Center. Dr. McGuire attended the University of Richmond, where she majored in Biology and medical school at Eastern Virginia Medical School. She completed a general surgery residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia after which she completed a breast surgery fellowship at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, FL.
Dr. McGuire conducts outcomes research focusing on targeted surgical and medical therapies for breast cancer and decreasing age-related, racial, ethnic and socioeconomic disparities in the detection, treatment and survivorship of breast cancer. In addition, she has lead institutional trials in axillary surgery after neoadjuvant chemotherapy and has served as Co-PI on several multi-institutional and cooperative group trials. She joined AWS as a new surgical attending hoping to find mentorship, sponsorship and fellowship. She has found that her membership allows her to both give and receive all three. She is thrilled to serve as the senior editor of the AWS issue of the AJS and looks forward to the opportunity to review and publish the outstanding academic work of our membership.
