Kim Ephgrave Visiting Professor Program: Call for Host Institution

The Kim Ephgrave Visiting Professor Program provides training institutions the opportunity to host top women surgeons as speakers, heightening the visibility of women surgeons and encouraging women medical students to pursue similar careers. Due to the current Covid-19 pandemic we have extended the host site application deadline to May 29, 2020. We also understand that your academic calendar has likely changed dramatically and  want to reassure you that the date for the visit is anytime during the 2020-2021 academic year, as mutually agreed upon with the Visiting Professor.

The Visiting Professor is sponsored by the AWS Foundation. The 2020 Kim Ephgrave Visiting Professors are Stephanie Bonne, MD, FACS and Marion Henry, MD, MPH, FACS.

Dr. Bonne's lecture topics include:

  • A Public Health Approach to Firearm Injury Reduction
  • Hospital Based Violence Intervention Programs to Improve Social Determinants of Health
  • Evidence-based Injury Prevention Strategies for Trauma Centers
  • Making Big Data Work: Using Tracer Antibiotic Algorithms to identify Antibiotic Resistance

Dr. Henry's lecture topics include:

  • Surgical Advocacy
  • Social Determinants of Health and Pediatric Surgical Car
  • Clinical Trials in Pediatric Surgery
  • Transitioning from Pediatric Surgical Care to Adult Care

To be considered for the 2020 Host Institution, please complete the following application.

Preference will be given to those institutions in which women represent a significant minority of the department. Both community and university training programs are encouraged to apply. The Chair of the Department of Surgery or surgery residency Program Director must complete this application. The AWS Foundation (AWSF) will provide a stipend of up to $2500 to cover travel and accommodation expenses for the Visiting Professor. The host institution will be expected to provide an honorarium to the Visiting Professor.

Call for Hosting Institutions – Deadline: May 29, 2020

Host Site Department of Surgery Responsibilities

  • Sponsor the program and coordinate a schedule for the two-day visit.
  • Provide opportunities for interaction between the Visiting Professor (VP) and local women surgical faculty, residents, and students. (Options include: reception, breakfast, luncheon, grand rounds and surgery.)
  • With the Visiting Professor, plan travel and accommodation reservations as well as other details of the visit.
  • Arrange for appropriate privileges and policy compliance if clinical rounds or operative procedures involving the VP are planned.
  • Submit a final report to the AWSF summarizing its experience with this program within 30 days of hosting the AWS VP.
  • Provide the VP an honorarium.
