AWS Signature Speaker Series
Share |

The AWS strategic plan defines our vision as "equity, diversity and inclusion for all surgeons" with a mission "to inspire, encourage, and enable women surgeons to realize their professional and personal goals." To support this mission, AWS has developed an exciting program to develop and promote mid-career female surgeons. The new AWS Signature Speaker Series will develop a cadre of dynamic women speakers who will represent AWS and serve as a resource for Departments of Surgery, surgical societies and conference panels. The goal of this program is to enhance the visibility of women surgeons as experts in their fields and to accelerate their path to promotion.

KCI, an Acelity Company, recognizes the importance of sponsoring women surgeons to reach their full potential and has graciously sponsored the AWS Signature Speakers Series through an unrestricted educational grant.

What does it include?

Selected AWS Signature Speakers will attend a half-day session at the AWS Annual Conference in San Francisco on Sunday October 27, 2019, where they will receive coaching from Dr. Marjorie Stiegler, a world-renowned speaking coach and developer of the "Speaking Prescription." Dr. Stiegler is a Harvard-trained physician entrepreneur, practicing anesthesiologist, and Adjunct Associate Professor at UNC Chapel Hill who holds professional member status with the National Speakers Association. In addition to this, her current academic work focuses on digital strategies for professional advancement.

At the session, Dr. Stiegler will help the new AWS Signature Speakers develop their presentation skills, their individual branding and increase their marketability. This small group workshop will be enhanced by two additional sessions during the following year via conference call with Dr. Stiegler and other signature speakers.

AWS will also provide funding up to $1000 towards defraying travel costs for a sponsored speaking engagement at either a national or regional event outside the speaker’s current location. Additionally, a database of AWS Signature Speakers will be made available to the surgical community in order to promote long-standing speaking opportunities.

Who is eligible to apply?

AWS members at the Assistant (more than five years out of training) and Associate Professor levels, as well as members in private practice (between 5-10 years in practice). All surgical specialties are encouraged to apply.

Applicants must be AWS members in good standing and they must be able to attend the half-day workshop, two conference calls and be committed to obtaining at least one national/regional speaking engagement. Applications are now closed.

Applications will be reviewed by a committee and speakers will be notified by September 2019.
