Call for ACS Governor to AWS

Please join us in thanking Susan Pories, MD, FACS for her years of service to ACS and AWS!
As Dr. Pories is nearing the end of her final term, AWS is requesting interest in the ACS Governor position.  Per the AWS Policy and Procedures:
The AWS Governor to the College serves a three-year term, which may be renewed for one additional three-year term. Reappointment of the AWS Governor will be made and approved by vote of the Council. AWS selects a primary and secondary candidate and submits this recommendation to the College who will make the final decision on the Governor position.
 
Nominees for AWS Governor must:
· be clinically active.
· be a current member of AWS.
· be a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons in good standing.
· have served on the AWS Council for a minimum of three years.  Current members of the AWS council who have served a minimum of three years on the Council are eligible.
· be able to attend all AWS Council meetings and Executive Committee meetings (approximately 6-8 per year with one meeting occurring at the October ACS meeting and one other face-to-face meeting in January, February or March.  All other meetings are via conference call.)
· provide a report at each Council and Executive Committee meeting on issues relevant to AWS and our membership
· be able to attend all Governor meetings and adequately represent AWS and our issues.

SAAS-AWS Resident Research Travel Award

SAAS-AWS RESIDENT RESEARCH TRAVEL AWARD

The Society of Asian Academic Surgeons (SAAS)-Association of Women Surgeons (AWS) Resident Travel Award is a $1000 travel grant supporting attendance of a surgical resident trainee at the SAAS Annual Meeting. The meeting this year will be hosted by Tulane University, Department of Surgery, from Sept 5-6, 2024 in New Orleans, Louisana.

AWS Starr Research Forum

Calling all students, residents, and fellows with research to share!
Due May 30, 2024

Student, resident and fellow members of AWS may submit up to two abstracts for the AWS Starr Medical Student and Resident Research Forum at the 2024 AWS Annual Conference. Abstracts are limited to 300 words and must have an Introduction, Methods, Results, Conclusions, and supporting author information. Incomplete abstracts will not be considered. Case reports and literature reviews will not be accepted. The deadline is 11:59PM EST on May 30.

Abstracts presented at other conferences are allowed, except for abstracts that you plan to present at the ACS conference. You cannot send an abstract on a project that is published prior to the conference. If your abstract is accepted, you must register for the 2024 AWS Annual Conference as a Student/Resident and present your work in person during the Scientific Session at the conference. (Please note that this session does not conflict with the medical student or resident activities at the ACS Clinical Congress.)

National Institute of Health CSR Reviewer Pool

AWS Members Can Apply by January 31 for Quarter 1

The Center for Scientific Review (CSR) at the National Institute of Health (NIH) has requested recommendations for AWS members willing and qualified to serve in the NIH CSR Reviewer Pool. Interested candidates are asked to complete the submission form below.

Nominated scientists should meet the following criteria:
• willing to serve as reviewers
• seen as experts, with integrity, in their field.
• have an active research program, extramural funding, and not currently be a standing member of an NIH study section or advisory council.
• productive scientists from diverse backgrounds and career stages – e.g. assistant, associate, and full professors.
