Welcome Students

An AWS student membership is a great way to prepare for a successful surgical career. As a member, you are part of a community of peers with access to exceptional tools, resources and role models. The student committee strives to bring you programs and services that will make a difference during your time as a medical student.


AWS National Medical Student Committee: Apply Now! 

Deadline: April 4th @ 11:59 PM EST

Applications are now open for the AWS National Medical Student Committee 2026-2027 board positions. The upcoming term will begin May 1, 2026, and will end May 1, 2027. We invite all current medical students to apply and get involved! This committee is driven to promote female medical students interested in surgery throughout the world and represents a tight knit group of student leaders who we hope will continue advocating for women throughout their careers. If you are interested in serving on the committee, please complete the application by 11:59 pm EST on Saturday, April 4, 2026. Zoom interviews will occur during April, followed by notifications of acceptance by the last week of April 2026.

Eligibility:
  • Meet 12 times per year (once per month, usually on the third Sunday at 12pm EST) via conference calls on Zoom.
  • Lead projects independently or in collaboration with other committee members.
  •  Medical students of all years are eligible to apply. All IMG applicants graduating in 2026 (or the academic year equivalent) but taking a gap year before residency may also apply.
  • Current AWS National Medical Student Committee members must complete this application in order to reapply for an additional term and/or a different position.

AWS sets the stage for a successful career supplying tools and information to faculty, counselors, and students. Through the AWS Student Chapters, students find a strong community for sharing experiences, learning best practices and developing leadership skills.

Student membership is $25/year and open to all students in medical school with a career interest in surgery. Student members may not vote or hold office.

Applications for the 2025-2026 AWS Medical Student Committee are now closed!

Each March, we invite all current medical students to apply for a position on the Association of Women Surgeons (AWS) National Medical Student Committee! Students who are graduating and taking a gap year prior to residency or IMGs taking a mandatory gap year (e.g. required hospital service year) are also eligible to apply. This committee is driven to not only promoting female medical students interested in surgery throughout the world, but it also represents a tight knit and goal-driven group of student leaders who we hope will continue advocating for women throughout their careers!
