Building an Academic Foundation

“Building an Academic Foundation” is a 7-part webinar series developed by the Association of Women Surgeons (AWS) that will equip senior surgical trainees and early career surgeons with guidance and mentorship on topics pertinent to starting a career in academic surgery.

Overarching areas that will be discussed include:

  • Finding and developing your first job
  • How to prepare for your first job - establishing an academic clinical practice
  • Establishing your academic career

Eligibility:

  • Surgical resident or fellow who will be completing training and entering academic practice in 2024 OR early career academic surgeons within the first 2 years of practice.
  • Willing to complete pre-program survey at the time of registration for the program and to complete surveys at the completion of the program and 1 year following program completion.
  • Active AWS member

AWS Resident & Fellow Virtual Meetings

Join the AWS Resident and Fellow Committee for a series of virtual meetings in 2023! The AWS Resident and Fellow Committee is focused on addressing surgical trainee programs and issues, with an emphasis on engaging residents and fellows in the AWS at an early stage in their careers. Committee members work closely with many of the other additional AWS committees, with a significant level of interaction with the Medical Student committee.

AWS Journal Club

The AWS Journal Club is an international peer-to-peer teaching curriculum that is focused on landmark papers in the field of general surgery with which all students and residents should be familiar. Student and resident members of AWS will have the opportunity to apply to present one of the landmark papers chosen for the journal club curriculum on a global platform.  We are also seeking residents and attendings to serve as mentors and moderators for each journal club session. The presentations will take place as a zoom event hosted by AWS, available internationally to all members and non-members of AWS. View articles and curriculum here

2022-2023 AWS Virtual Cross-Mentorship Workshop Series

Presented by the AWS #HeForShe Committee

The Association of Women Surgeons #HeForShe Committee is hosting a series of six monthly virtual workshops to facilitate dialogue on mentoring the diverse group of mentees in surgery. Accreditation​

The American College of Surgeons is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians. ​

The American College of Surgeons designates this live activity for a maximum of 9 AMA PRA Category 1 credits. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.​
