Visiting Professor & Host Institution Announced

The Society of Black Academic Surgeons (SBAS) and the Association of Women Surgeons (AWS) are pleased to announce that Chelsea Dorsey, MD, has been selected as the 2023-2024 SBAS & AWS Visiting Professor. Dr. Dorsey will be hosted for two days by the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) to offer presentations and connect with local women surgical faculty, residents, and students.

About the SBAS & AWS Visiting Professor Program

Description:

To provide active SBAS and AWS members who are faculty members at the rank of Associate Professor and within 15 years of their faculty appointment the opportunity to serve as a Visiting Professor for the Department of Surgery at a Host Institution.  SBAS and the AWS Foundation (AWSF) will sponsor the Visiting Professor by providing a stipend in the amount $2000 to cover travel and accommodation expenses.  The Host Institution should consider providing the Visiting Professor with an honorarium.

Purpose:

To promote the careers of mid-career SBAS-AWS members and recognize academic excellence.

Host Site Department of Surgery Responsibilities:

  1. Sponsor the Visiting Professorship program and coordinate a schedule for the two-day visit.
  2. Select a presentation topic provided by the Visiting Professor
  3. Provide opportunities for interaction between the Visiting Professor and local women surgical faculty, residents, and students.
  4. Coordinate with the Visiting Professor to plan travel and accommodation reservations as well as other details of arrangements for the visit.
  5. Provide any comments to AWS and SBAS within 30 days of hosting the AWS-SBAS Visiting Professor.
  6. Consider providing the Visiting Professor with an honorarium.

How to Apply:

Applications are now closed, and the next opportunity will open in summer 2024. The Host Institution will be an institutional member of both AWS and SBAS.   The Host Institution must submit a letter of interest from the Chair of the Department of Surgery and a draft itinerary for the Visiting Professor's visit.
